Warranty versus breakdown cover: what’s the difference?
They are not interchangeable. A vehicle warranty is about the cost of an eligible repair under its agreement. Breakdown cover is about getting help when a vehicle has stopped or cannot continue safely. A driver may choose to have both because they respond to different moments.
The short version
Think of the question each product answers:
- Warranty: “Can this agreement contribute to an approved repair for a covered mechanical or electrical failure?”
- Breakdown cover: “Who can help me at the roadside or recover the vehicle if it stops?”
- Motor insurance: “What protection applies to risks such as an accident, theft, or other insured event under that policy?”
What a warranty is for
A warranty sets out covered components, exclusions, claim limits, excesses, maintenance conditions, and an approval process. AutoPlan’s AutoPlan’s terms and conditions describe a contractual vehicle warranty and say that eligible mechanical and electrical failures are considered subject to the agreement.
That does not mean the provider automatically pays every cost after a breakdown. The fault must meet the agreement, and repairs normally need approval first. Read what a used-car warranty covers for the exclusions that matter most.
What breakdown cover is for
RAC describes breakdown cover as help if a vehicle breaks down, including roadside assistance and recovery to a garage when it cannot be fixed at the roadside. The exact service depends on the breakdown policy, so check whether it includes roadside, recovery, home assistance, onward travel, or other options.
Breakdown assistance does not decide whether a failed part is covered by a warranty, and a warranty does not automatically provide roadside recovery. Check both documents before you need them.
Which questions should you ask?
Before buying or renewing either product, ask who you call first, whether the service is available at home and on the road, who chooses the garage, and what you pay if the repair is not covered. For a warranty, also check the claim limit, excess, exclusions, maintenance evidence, and whether approval is required before diagnosis or repair.
If you are comparing AutoPlan plans, see the Silver, Gold and Platinum cover levels. For a fault that has already happened, follow the claim guide rather than authorising repairs first.
